Youth After School Program (cont.)
Barrio Jeronimo Lopez used to be a haven for teen gangs, but now the Youth Afterschool Project, provides an after-school program for 185 teens. The teens tell us what they want to learn and we find the teachers. They also attend workshops on subjects like teen pregnancy, substance abuse, domestic violence, climate change and HIV/AIDS. Over the years, the program has included classes in English, computers, reading and writing, dressmaking, tailoring, baking, painting, guitar, hair styling, and sports. Community service is an important component.
